Unlock SIM for International Travel

If you travel internationally, it’s nice to be able to put in a local-country SIM card for Internet and calls. This is far cheaper than International Roaming.

AT&T won’t do it

I just confirmed with AT&T that they changed their policy. They no longer unlock the SIM card on iPhones, even for customers in good standing for over a year. Compare this to Verizon that will unlock a phone after 3 months.

So if you are buying an iPhone and travel internationally, don’t chose AT&T as your carrier.

  1. Hi Guys, I’m looking at getting the iP5 when it comes out. As I will probably do some international traveling over the next 3 years or so I want to make sure that I will be able to use my phone while out of the US. I have had AT&T and have no real complaints with the service except that it is prohibitively expensive to use outside the US. The cheapest solution is just turn the phone off unless there is wifi and then use data only and buy a pay as you go phone abroad.

I would like to keep the same #. If AT&T don’t unlock and I can’t use an international sim then I have to leave them.

Do you have a local office/shop I could visit?

    Cheers

  2. We don’t have a local shop and we don’t sell phones or SIM cards. We just provide consulting and advice.

I suggest contacting AT&T or going to a store to see if they’ll unlock it for you. If they do and you get a foreign SIM for international traveling, you’ll have a different phone number though.
